Golden Light 2

Golden Light 2 is the second of a pair of silk wall hangings with both an ecclesiastical and a Welsh cultural inspiration..
Working wholecloth, using both free machine and hand quilting, was a joy as the shapes appeared in the glowing yellow silk dupion.
Extra areas of wadding were added to enhance this effect in areas of focal interest.

  • 76cm x 53cm
  • Silk dupion fabric
  • Cotton backing and wadding
  • Cotton and metallic threads
  • Wholecloth

Small Geckos 5

Small Geckos is a series of five pieces based on the magic tile block.
They developed as an experiment with colour combinations.
I return, from time to time, to the enchanting, lithe forms of geckos.

More geckos turned up to get their friends out of prison!
They all escaped, so there are no more ‘small gecko’ quilts!

Tranquil Pond 2 by Dorothy Russell. Textile Artist

Tranquil Pond 2

Tranquil Pond 2

The upper pond, on our terrace, is a sound-scape as well as a visual stimulus, as the water falls into the lower pond. By it we sit on beautiful days enjoying its calm presence, gazing across the Menai Strait to Snowdonia beyond. The ponds did not exist before we made them – now they are special habitats and reward us for our work.

The main image is fractured and rendered in solid fabrics: the sheers, by comparison, are used in response to the shimmering movement of water and its translucence.

This work is a direct emotional response to one of the ponds on our land. My relationship is not only with the prolific wildlife, but also comes from the sense of calm working by it offers me.

The main image is fractured and rendered in solid fabrics: the sheers, by comparison, are used in response to the shimmering movement of water and its translucence, giving us a glimpse into another world.

Waves 4

Part of a series first shown at Oriel Ynys Mon, Anglesey, April to June 2015

Informed during my childhood on the North East coast and now the West coast where I live and sail, the inspiration for the ‘Waves’ series of hangings came from the tumbling, rolling and constantly reshaping moods of the sea; sometimes gentle, twinkling in sunlight, sometimes tumultuous and threatening.

Three Sisters

Three Sisters

Part of a series to be shown at Oriel Ynys Mon April to June 2015

As a child, on holidays in Swaledale, North Yorkshire, I gazed across the valley at three dominant trees, grouped together as though in conversation: they were known as the Three Sisters. The memory has directly influenced this hanging and may also explain my frequent return to the subject of trees in my work.

We stand surrounded by the work of thieves

My response to greed and dishonesty found within the establishments of our society as exemplified by the banking crisis which lead to the financial crash and the expenses scandals within government.

It seems that these vices are always part of society and will never be controlled.
