Dorothy Russell Quilt. Gecko 5

Small Geckos 5

Small Geckos is a series of five pieces based on the magic tile block.
They developed as an experiment with colour combinations.
I return, from time to time, to the enchanting, lithe forms of geckos.

More geckos turned up to get their friends out of prison!
They all escaped, so there are no more ‘small gecko’ quilts!

Tranquil Pond 1 bt Dorothy Russell. Textile Artist

Tranquil Pond 1

This work is a direct emotional response to one of the ponds on our land. My relationship is not only with the prolific wildlife, but also comes from the sense of calm working by it offers me.

The main image is fractured and rendered in solid fabrics: the sheers, by comparison, are used in response to the shimmering movement of water and its translucence, giving us a glimpse into another world.

Three Sisters. Art Quilt by Dorothy Russell

Three Sisters

Three Sisters

Part of a series to be shown at Oriel Ynys Mon April to June 2015

As a child, on holidays in Swaledale, North Yorkshire, I gazed across the valley at three dominant trees, grouped together as though in conversation: they were known as the Three Sisters. The memory has directly influenced this hanging and may also explain my frequent return to the subject of trees in my work.

Her coffin, with her image carved on the lid, is in the porch of St Mary’s church in Beaumaris.
