This small Quilt is part of a series of work of various sizes based on an on-going study of trees.
The piece employs various techniques including reverse applique, applique, machine quilting – which also uses the leaf motif – and beading.

Having been to a superb exhibition of Japanese art and crafts in London several years before, I decided to base this piece of work on the family crests of some of the the major families in Japan.

Commission based on Siwan (Joan/Joana) daughter of King John and wife of Llewelyn ap Iorwerth (the Great). She lived in the various courts belonging to this prince of Gwynedd and was buried in Llanfaes, near Beaumaris, where a friary was built in her memory. Her coffin, with her image carved on the lid, is in the porch of St Mary’s church in Beaumaris.
‘Breila’ is an old Welsh word for wild rose.

This is a medallion quilt, based on a central design which is then surrounded by border after border.

Based on a Japanese system of paper cutting, adapted for fabric, using both cotton and mixed fibres.

This quilt won first place in the Large Wall-hanging section of the Scottish National Quilt Championships.
Based on information taken from the book ‘The Celtic Wisdom of Trees’ by Jane Gifford, about the tree associated with my birth date – the Elder. The associations are dark, with reminders of ‘death’ and ‘the inevitable’, witches hide in their trunks and the wood will not burn well: associated colours are dark green and black! However it isn’t all bad news – the tree has healing properties and it provided elder flowers to make cordial or champagne. The berries also make a good natural dye with alum and salt used as mordants.
