Tutorial No 2. How to Make a Knot and Bury It
It is important when quilting that the back of the work looks as good as the front. Therefore, when hand quilting, the knot is buried leaving no evidence of starting or finishing a thread. This is how to make and bury a knot.
Having threaded the needle, take the end of the thread between index finger and thumb.
Wrap the thread round the index finger
once…
then a further half turn.
Hold the thread secure with the middle finger.
Take the needle through the looped thread.
Pull it through.
Take the needle through once more.
Pull it through.
Pull taut.
Slowly slide the loop off the index finger.
Keep it controlled
until the knot forms near the end of the thread.
Snip off any excess thread.
Put the needle into the work about half to one inch from the place you intend to start quilting and bring it out where you wish to begin the first stitch. Important: The needle should only go through the top fabric and the wadding.
There should be no evidence of the stitch on the back of the work.
Pull the thread until the knot rests on the top fabric.
Re position your hold to keep the fabric in tension.
Give a little tug on the thread and the knot will ‘pop’ through into the wadding.
Begin to quilt.
